I’m sure you’ve noticed that smartphones and tablets are now hugely important for e-commerce both in terms of traffic, leads and sales. According to Ofcom, smartphone penetration in the UK now stands at 58% while 19% of the population owns a tablet.

On average mobile phones account for 31% of website traffic in the UK, according to Mobify.

According to IMRG, mobile commerce grew by 254% between 2010 and 2011, and by a further 300% between 2011 and 2012. There are 5 times more smartphones shipped across North America and Western Europe compared to tablets.

32% of smartphone owners use their phone to research products every week

68% of UK smartphone users prefer to visit a mobile friendly website than an app version of the website. Tablet website visits convert into action at 4 times the rate of smartphones, and both result in action more so than desktop website visits.

Coming soon to a TV near you

Smart TVs, they exist already of course, but are not particularly widespread. But what do websites look like on them? Do they display well?

The conclusions are clear: times have changed on the web over the last three years.

Most current websites can be displayed on a mobile or tablet device, but if they have not been optimised for those devices, they can be very awkward to use, involving zooming and shifting the page around the screen; this effort does not encourage visitors to stay long or return again. The answer to these issues is to build websites so that they are responsive to the device they are displayed on, including wide screen Smart TVs.

At Design Jazz we are working with existing clients to bring their websites into this brave new mobile,
multi-screen era. If you feel it is time your website was updated, call us on 01746 767319.
